Drogosch, Guthals and Irving Lead Deacs at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. -Seniors Garret Drogosch and Nate Guthals finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 8k race while junior Nicole Irving finished ninth in the women's 6k to lead the Wake Forest cross country teams Friday evening at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
Virginia Tech hosted three ACC schools Wake Forest, Florida State and Georgia Tech, as well as out-of-conference teams East Tennessee State, Davidson, Concord University, University of Charleston and Bluefield State College.
The Demon Deacon men's squad finished second overall totaling 72 points, while the women finished third with 77 points. Florida State finished first on both sides, with the women totaling 15 points, while the Seminole men finished with 19 points.
Drogosch and Guthals guided the men as Drogosch crossed the line at 25:15.16 to finish first for the Deacs and sixth overall. Less than six seconds later, Guthals placed seventh overall with a time of 25:20.64.
Senior Anthony Marois finished next in line for Wake Forest in 23rd place (25:41.31), followed by a trio of teammates less than three seconds apart with freshman Kent Garrett in 25th (25:46.05), senior Tom Finneran in 26th (25:46.60) and senior Jake Graham in 27th (25:48.65).
On the women's side, Irving dominated in her first meet this season. The Ballston Lake, N.Y. native finished ninth overall with a 6k time of 21:53.07. Junior Melanie Powers crossed the line in 22:51.45 to take 23rd place.
A group of four freshmen finished less than two seconds apart, led by Ashley Brubaker in 27th place (22:57.96), Samantha Jones in 28th (22:58.25), Meredith Kilburn in 29th (22:58.48) and Kathleen Darling in 30th (22:59.91).
The Deacs will take next weekend off before returning to action Sept. 28 for the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
