Deacons Run Past Mars Hill, 109-65, in Exhibition Game
Nov. 9, 2009
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Sandra Garcia netted 22 points and three other Demon Deacons scored in double figures as Wake Forest stormed past Mars Hill with a score of 109-65 in the first and only exhibition game of the Wake Forest women's basketball 2009-10 season.
Mars Hill junior Brittini Young led the Lions with 18 points. Wake Forest junior Brittany Waters had a game-high nine rebounds and Mars Hill's Margaret Harvey had a team-high five rebounds.
The Demon Deacons shot 54 percent from the floor and held Mars Hill to 31 percent.
The Wake Forest freshman class made an impressive showing in its first public appearance. Sandra Garcia (Hollywood, Fla.) was Wake Forest's starting center and recorded three blocks and seven rebounds in addition to her 22 points. Lakevia Boykin (Raleigh, N.C.) came off the bench for Camille Collier in the shooting guard slot and also filled in at the point, registering 10 points through nine minutes of play. Redshirt freshman Patrice Johnson (Washington, D.C.) put up six points and five rebounds.
Junior Brittany Waters was just shy of a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Despite the impressive offensive performance, the Deacons struggled defensively, registering 24 fouls, giving the Lions 35 attempts from the charity stripe.
"I'm very concerned defensively. We fouled so much, we did not do a good enough job at controlling the dribble. We'll have to clean that up," head coach Mike Petersen said.
Wake Forest will open play in the regular season on Friday, November 13, taking on Jacksonville at 5 p.m. at the Joel Coliseum. The Wake Forest men's basketball team will immediately follow at 8 p.m., facing Oral Roberts.
