Wake Forest Grounds Coppin State Eagles 62-40
Nov. 23, 2009
Wake Forest improves to 4-0 with the victory and Coppin State stalls at 2-2.
Freshman Asia Williams had her best performance to date, tallying 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Senior Jessie Cain and junior Kem Wilson made their first appearance of the season, logging two minutes at the end of regulation.
Chanelle Downing led the Eagles with eight points and Jeanine Manley posted the team-high eight rebounds.
Wake Forest was 20-for-25 from the free throw line, the team's best mark since December 2008. Brittany Waters was a near-perfect 10-for-11, setting a new charity stripe career-high.
The Deacons were on point from the free throw line but struggled in shooting from the field. In the first half Wake Forest was a frustrating 8-for-31, though the Eagles were only fractionally better with a 7-for-26 mark. Wake Forest improved to 46 percent in the second half, helped by Secily Ray, who scored all of her nine points in the last 19 minutes.
Coppin State was the first to get on the board, as Manley landed a layup on the first Eagle possession. After several minutes of fast baseline-to-baseline exchanges, Camille Collier landed a 3-point basket at the 17:17 mark to push the Deacons in front. Wake Forest would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
Wake Forest held a 10 point lead at halftime and continued to build throughout the second half. With 1:52 left in regulation Asia Williams added a layup that gave Wake Forest a 23 point advantage (60-37), the largest Demon Deacon lead of the game.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on Wednesday, November 25, to host cross-town Rival High Point at 3 p.m.
