WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Elisa Penna was named to the Italian senior national team for the first time in her career as Italy opened play at EuroBasket Women 2017 Friday (June 16).

Following a month of training and exhibition games, the national team was trimmed from 18 players down to 12, with Penna making the final roster. The native of Bergamo, Italy had been a member of the youth national team throughout her career, but Friday’s appearance marked her first competition at the senior level.

Placed in Group B, Italy opened play against Belarus Friday with an 80-60 victory in which Penna played 10 minutes and finished with three points, three rebounds and one assist. The team will next face Turkey on Saturday (June 17) and Slovakia on Monday (June 19).

The top three teams out each of the four groups advance to the 12-team elimination round, where the top five teams, not including Spain, will qualify for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. As the host nation for the FIBA World Cup, Spain automatically earns a berth, meaning six total teams from EuroBasket Women 2017 will advance.
