Emily Ruth, a former Wake Forest field hockey player, returns for her second season as a Demon Deacon assistant coach. Playing under head coach Jennifer Averill from 2001-04, Ruth was a member of two NCAA Championship teams and four NCAA semifinals.
"We are thrilled to have Emily back at Wake Forest," said head coach Jennifer Averill on Ruth's hiring. "She served as an instrumental part of the team while she was an student-athlete at Wake Forest and has an incredible work ethic and passion for the game. I am positive Emily will make a great impact on the team in the coming year."
Ruth's responsibilities at Wake Forest include coordinating team travel, assisting in the recruiting process and the overseeing the development of the goalkeepers. In her first year working with the keepers, Ruth helped then-junior Kristina Gagliardi to the nation's second-best goals against average or .958.
Ruth began her coaching career with a one year stint at Stanford University, assisting Lesley Irvine. While at Stanford, Ruth helped lead the Cardinals to an 8-12 overall record and a third place finish in the NorPac. In addition, she helped with the development of two All-NorPac players, including Jessica Zutz, the 2004 NorPack Rookie of the Year.
In her time on the field for the Deacs, Ruth helped lead the team to two consecutive national championships, in addition to final four appearances in each of her four seasons. Scoring nine goals in her junior campaign and five in her senior year, Ruth served an active role as a member of the Deacon offense. In her career, Ruth tallied 38 points in a productive playing career at Wake Forest, collecting 18 goals and a pair of assists. A Dean's List student, Ruth graduated from Wake Forest in May of 2004, with a Bachelor's degree in Communications. |
