IOWA CITY, IOWA - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team opened the 2009 season with a 3-2 victory over ninth-ranked Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

On Sunday Wake Forest (1-0) will wrap up the tournament with Michigan (0-1), who fell 2-1 to North Carolina in the second session on Saturday. Iowa (0-1) will face UNC (1-0) in the morning game Sunday.

The squads played an evenly matched first half. Iowa's Sarah Pergine scored first, picking up and sending in a rebounded shot in the 18th minute. Hilary Moore, who led the Deacons in scoring during 2008, countered less than two minutes later with an unassisted shot off a breakaway play.

During the first half Iowa had a 1-0 advantage on corners and the Deacons had a slight 5-3 edge in shots. After entering halftime in a 1-1 tie, Wake Forest stepped up its attack and out-shot Iowa 10-2. Iowa goalkeeper Tori Garifo registered five saves in the second half alone.

Kim Romansky pushed the Deacons in front in the 44th minute off a corner play, with assists from Lauren Greenwald and Raisa Schiller. Iowa tied the match with 20 minutes to play, but Aileen Davis wrapped up the Wake Forest win with a goal off a rebound in the 60th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Young started for the Deacons and played all 70 minutes. She registered two saves. Freshman Lizzie Rae earned a starting spot in her first collegiate game, stepping into Wake's midfield line. Sophomore Cristen Atchison started for the second time in her career.
