WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team held off a late rally by No. 13 Liberty to beat the Flames, 2-1, on Sunday at Kentner Stadium. Senior Jess Newak scored both goals for Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons improve to 6-2 with the win while Liberty dropped to 5-2.

Newak gave Wake Forest the lead in the fourth minute of the game when she buried a penalty stroke. The Deacs had a 7-4 advantage in shots at the end of the first half but held a 1-0 lead on Newak's goal.

It appeared Liberty had tied the game in the 50th minute but the goal was called back. Wake Forest capitalized on the call and added an insurance goal in the 65th minute. Newak scored her second of the day, this time on a penalty corner, assisted by Emily Conroe and Shannon Eby.

Liberty trailed 2-0 with just over two minutes to play and opted to pull the goalie for an extra field player. The Deacs were able to hold them off for over a minute before the Flames broke through with a goal with 59 seconds to play. Liberty continued to apply pressure on the Wake Forest defense, but could not find the back of the net to send the contest into overtime.

Senior Valerie Dahmen posted three saves for the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest heads back on the road to face ACC rival Louisville on Friday at 6 p.m. The Cardinals are 6-2 on the season with an 0-2 record in league play.
