Oct. 5, 2003
Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest Field Hockey team out shot the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 59-0, in Sunday's game. Despite Mountaineer goalkeeper Kate Ryno's impressive 30 saves on the day, the Deacs pocketed a 6-0 victory. #1Wake Forest improves to 11-0 overall.
On an assist from teammate Maeke Boreel, Wake's Kelly Dostal scored the opening goal in the first minute of action. The goal came off of a penalty corner, the first of the Deacs' 26 on the day. Boreel would later score on an assist from Dostal to put the Deacs' up 4-0. Junior Claire Laubach took each of the penalty corners for the Deacons, eventually scoring off of one with just minutes left in the second half. Emily Ruth scored her fourth goal of the season, while Kelly Doton tallied two goals and one assist.
"The first goal came on a penalty stroke, but the second one was on a broken play," said Doton of her 12th goal this season. "I just happened to be open and the goalie came out to challenge me. I went left and luckily it went in".
"We had good possession and domination, we just need to clean up inside the 25, said Head Coach Jennifer Averill. "We will definitely be working on our finishing touches this week in practice. I was happy that everyone got to play today, with three games in five days, it's nice to not wear out the same eleven girls with each game."
The Deacs, now with a 30 game winning streak, play the Davidson Wildcats (7-4, 3-0) on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:00 pm in Davidson, NC.
