WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team used four second-half goals to roll over Richmond, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
After going into halftime with a 2-0 lead, the Demon Deacons (8-5, 2-2 ACC) offense exploded for four second-half goals to run away with a comfortable victory over the Spiders (4-9, 3-1 A-10). Wake Forest has now outscored its opponents, 18-8, over the team's current three-game win streak.
For the second consecutive game, the Deacs achieved a season-high in shot attempts, as they recorded 31 on Sunday against the Spiders. The Demon Deacons also earned 11 penalty corners, compared to just two for Richmond.
Jule Grashoff continued to share the wealth. The junior tied her career-high with three assists. Grashoff now has nine assists in the team's last five games. Sophomore Nicola Pluta added a season-high two goals for the Deacs. Pluta has scored seven times in her nine appearances this season.
Wake Forest did not break through until the 13th minute, when Shannon Eby's deflection off a corner gave the Deacs an early advantage. Then, with under 10 minutes left in the first half, Pluta found the back of the net to give the team a 2-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, the Demon Deacons wasted no time, as Rachel Hirsch converted after Grashoff created a turnover inside the circle. After the Spiders' Katrina Balatgek scored to cut the Wake Forest lead to 3-1, the Deacs answered in the 56th minute on Grashoff's team-leading 11th goal of the season.
The Demon Deacons increased their lead to 5-1, as Pluta added her second of the day on a wild scramble in front of the net. Richmond answered on their next possession with Balatgek's second of the day. The Richmond midfielder dove to deflect Kasey Gilbride's cross past Demon Deacon goalkeeper Isla Bint.
Wake Forest concluded the scoring in the 66th minute on sophomore Jess Pianko's second goal of the season. Pianko found the back of a wide-open net after clever passes from Pluta and Grashoff. Pianko has scored in two straight games after netting her first of the season at App State on Oct. 4.
Up next, the Demon Deacons return to ACC play, as they travel to Durham to take on Duke this Friday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
