Chapel Hill, N.C. - Junior Lauren Crandall scored the golden goal in double overtime to lead the #1 Wake Forest field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over #3 North Carolina, Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C. The win keeps the Demon Deacons undefeated with a 13-0 record and increases their non-conference streak to 62.

"It was a hard fought game," Head Coach Jennifer Averill said. "North Carolina played a much more unified game today than they did before. I was impressed with our ability to stay poised under the pressure."

In the last outing two weeks ago, the Demon Deacons defeated the Tar Heels, 2-0, in Kentner Stadium. Three of the last four outings between the in-state rivals have extended into overtime, including a 3-2 triple-overtime thriller last season. In overtime games against North Carolina, Wake leads, 5-3.

Freshman Christine Suggs scored the first goal of the game seven minutes in. She brought the ball into the circle from the 25 and took a strong, clean shot at the top left that went right to the back of the boards. Answering back nearly seven minutes later, the Tar Heels earned a free hit just outside of the circle. Knocking the ball in, Britt van Beek tipped it past Kristina Gagliardi to knot the score.

The Heels took the lead in the second half with a field goal off the top of the circle by Laree Beans with 28 minutes remaining. Taking nine shots to the Heel's three, the score remained in Carolina's favor, until there was just over four minutes remaining. At that point, Crandall found Haley Scott who was waiting just in front of the cage, where she slammed it past the keeper. With a minute and a half remaining, the Heels earned a penalty corner, but Gagliardi made the diving save. Then, the Deacs brought the ball down the field in the remaining seconds and earned a penalty corner, but they were unsuccessful and the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Carolina's Rachel Dawson was called with a yellow card, putting the Tar Heels down a man. Earning a penalty corner, Crandall took a solid shot that made it past the keeper, but a defensive save by Beans kept the game from ending. Not allowing the Heels any shots and taking five of their own, the time ran down on the first overtime and the game continued.

Playing into a double overtime for the second time this season Crandall ended the game at the 91:28 mark with a quick goal after dribbling the ball from the far side of the circle to the edge of the post. The goal is her second of the season.

Wake Forest will return to Winston-Salem to host Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Oct. 16. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
