Oct. 15, 2007
STANFORD, Calif. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team picked up its fifth straight win and concluded its road schedule after blanking Stanford 8-0 on Monday night. Melissa Martin and Hilary Moore added two goals each, while four other Demon Deacons added one goal apiece.
Wake Forest improved to 10-4 on the season, while the Cardinal fell to 7-4 overall.
Liz Fries, who is credited with the game-winner, put the Deacs up 1-0 after a penalty corner, receiving the ball from Minou Gimbrere. Michelle Kasold scored at the 14:31 mark after firing a shot from the top of the circle past Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell. Melissa Martin scored her first of two goals at the 16:49 mark when she controlled a pass from Regina Shannon and found the back of the net to put the Deacs up 3-0.
Wake led 5-0 at the half after Shannon and Martin scored less than a minute apart with Kasold recording assists on both goals.
Stanford kept the Deacs from scoring for almost 20 minutes in the second half, but the visiting team eventually found its way back into Cardinal territory. Hilary Moore scored back-to-back goals at the 57:53 mark and the 61:14 mark. Kasold was credited with her third assist of the game on Moore's first goal.
Leading 7-0, Lauren Love scored her first goal of the season with time expiring. Love chipped in a loose ball as Moore recorded the assist on Wake's final goal.
The eight goals in today's win marks the most in a game for the Deacs this season and held Stanford scoreless for the first time since Sept. 1, 2006 when the Cardinal also fell to the hands of Wake Forest, 6-0, in California.
Wake Forest returns home for an Atlantic Coast Conference game against Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
