Eight to Join Wake Forest Field Hockey for 2012 Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Eight players will be joining the Wake Forest field hockey program in the fall of 2012, as announced by head coach Jennifer Averill. The group includes a goalkeeper and seven position players.

The eight incoming freshmen are Valerie Dahmen, Madi Julius, Leah Matthews, Jess Newak, Lauren Rogers, Emily Smith, Kali Vicars and Krysta Wangerin.

Dahmen, from Duisburg, Germany, is the lone goalkeeper in the group and will join Kaitlyn Ruhf and Letitia Nichols at that position for the Deacs.

Smith and Rogers will bolster the defense and see time in the middle and the back. Vicars, Newak and Matthews are all midfielders, while Wangerin may be used as both a midfielder and a forward. Julius comes to Wake Forest having played primarily up front throughout her high school years.

Valerie Dahmen
Duisburg, Germany/Landfermann Gymnasium

Manned the posts for Landfermann Gymnasium en route to the state championship in 2006 and 2007 as well as a runner-up appearance in 2008 ... Also helped the team to capture a national championship in 2007 ... Played club field hockey with Club Raffelberg for 12 years ... Earned a national indoor championship in 2008 ... Was named the most outstanding goalkeeper at the Skoda Cup in 2009 ... Started at goalkeeper for the West German state selection for five consecutive years (2005-2010) ... Recipient of the prestigious Mercator Scholarship to spend a year abroad in China.

Madi Julius
Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin HS

Played one year of field hockey at Harrisburg Christian School before moving to Lower Dauphin for her final three seasons ... Helped the Falcons to a 66-10 overall record in her three years ... Was named the Mid Penn Keystone Conference Player of the Year in 2011 after leading the league in scoring ... Earned an honorable mention on the All-State team as a junior and was First Team as a senior ... Named a Mid Penn Keystone All-Star in 2010 and 2011 ... Won the District III AAA Championship in 2011 after a 23-2 season ... Also earned three varsity letters in soccer ... Was a team captain in 2011 and led Lower Dauphin to the conference title game ... Was a member of the National Honor Society ... Recognized with an outstanding leadership selection by the conference ... Also earned awards recognizing her integrity and respect.

Leah Matthews
Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown HS

Four-year letter winner at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, Va. ... Earned First Team All-State, All-Region and All-District honors as a four-year starter ... Led the team in assists in each of her four seasons ... Named the 2011 Virginia Gazette Player of the Year and garnered First Team honors on the Daily Press All-Star team in 2010 and 2011 ... Participated in the USA Field Hockey National Futures Championship five times, placing second in 2007 ... Also participated in soccer and indoor track at Jamestown High School ... Received four letters in soccer and one in indoor track ... Named Second Team All-District in soccer ... Was an AP Scholar and was placed on the honor roll in each of her four years in high school.

Jess Newak
Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood HS

Played her high school field hockey at Crestwood High School in Mountain Top, Pa. ... Awards in her senior season included Second Team All-American honors, First Team All-State, Academic All-State and spots on the Times Leader and Citizen's Voice All-Star teams ... Was a team captain in 2011 as the Comets posted a perfect 15-0 mark in Wyoming Valley Conference play ... Finished her high school career with 29 goals and 17 assists in three seasons and an overall record of 60-11 ... Also an outstanding track athlete ... Was a three-year letter winner in the sport ... Currently holds the Crestwood school records in the 100m dash (12.7 seconds), 200m dash (25.71 seconds) and 400m dash (58.02 seconds) ... Anchored the 4x400m relay team with a school-record time of 4:07.14 ... Active member of Key Club and Relay for Life.

Three nominations to the TISAC All-Conference Team (2009-2011) ... NC All-Stars selection in 2010 and 2011 ... MVP and captain for the Cavaliers during her senior season ... Earned a state championship in 2008 and semifinal appearances from 2009-2011 ... Also earned two letters apiece in lacrosse and track and field ... Was WTKR News' Athlete of the Week on one occasion in 2011 ... Earned the team MVP award during her junior season in 2010 ... Garnered spots on the All-Virginia Gazette Team in 2010 and 2011 ... Extremely active in extracurricular activities, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Key Club, National Honor Society and World Cultures Club ...
