Wake Forest Hosts NCAA Field Hockey Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 2006 NCAA Field Hockey Championship weekend will be held in Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University, Nov. 17 and 19. The first semifinal game, between No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 4 Duke will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by game the second game at 7 p.m., between Maryland and Connecticut. The championship match between the winners of the first two games will be played at 12:05 on Sunday and aired live on CSTV.

The trip to the semifinals is the seventh consecutive for the Demon Deacons and the match against the Blue Devils will be the fifth time in a row that two teams have faced each other in semifinal or final action. Last year, Duke defeated Wake Forest, 3-2, in the semifinals. Prior to that meeting, Wake Forest defeated Duke in the finals in 2002 and 2004.

Wake Forest enters the tournament as the top seed overall after winning the ACC Championship and advancing through the first two rounds of the tournament with victories over American and Virginia. The Demon Deacons are riding a 12 game winning streak and have outscored opponents 47-7 in those games. Wake Forest is led by sophomore Michelle Kasold with 53 points off 18 goals and 17 assists.

Duke enters the 2006 NCAA Championship with a 16-5 overall record. Marian Dickinson leading the Blue Devils with 48 points off 19 goals and 10 assists and in goal, Caitlin Williams owns a 1.20 goals against average. The Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a close overtime victory over James Madison, 3-2 and then a 3-0 blanking of Ohio State.
