PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Freshman Michelle Shin carded a 1-over 72 and junior Natalie Sheary posted a 73 to lead the Wake Forest women's golf team in the opening round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Country Club on Monday.

The Deacons carded a very solid round of 14-over 298 and currently stand in sixth-place in the 15-team field. Southern California leads after an opening round of even-par 284. Duke got a round of 4-under 67 from Lindy Duncan and is currently second after a 292.

"For our first round this year, I thought we did pretty well," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "Three of the students haven't played a competitive round since last October so to get out here and break 300 in the opening round is pretty good. We have some rust but we'll work on those things and hopefully build on that tomorrow."

Shin played a very steady round on Monday, opening with eight-straight pars before recording her lone bogey of the opening nine at No. 18. She then made seven-straight pars on the front nine before bogeying the par-3 8th to slip to 2-over. But the freshman would finish with a solid birdie at the ninth to card an opening round 72.

"Michelle played really well today," Dailey said. "She was so consistent. I think she hit every fairway and hit a bunch of greens. She is striking the ball well and that's definitely a positive this early in the season."

Shin is currently tied for seventh, just five shots off the lead of Duncan and USC's Jennifer Song, who both shot 67.

Sheary also played very well on Monday. She made a birdie at the 12th to get to 1-under but would fall to 2-over after three-straight bogeys at 14, 15 and 16. The two-time All-American would then par her final 11 holes to post a fine 73. She will start the second round in a tie for 12th.

Freshman Stephanie Kim played a solid opening round, making four bogeys and 14 pars on her way to a 75. She is currently tied for 28th. Senior Dolores White carded matching 39s to open with a 78 and is tied for 49th.

Sophomore Cheyenne Woods had a very tough start to her round as she was 8-over par through the first three holes. But she was able to regroup and was just 1-over the rest of the way, posting an opening round 80.

The second round will get underway at 12:30 pm EST on Tuesday. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of both of the final two rounds.
