BATON ROUGE, La. - Senior Nannette Hill posted her second-straight bogey-free round to finish with a 54-hole score of 210, which is the lowest in school history, to lead the No. 7 Wake Forest women's golf team to a fifth place finish at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge. Hill started her day with two birdies right out of the gate and would make the turn in 2-under 34. She then started the back nine with five straight pars before a birdie at No. 15 and another at No. 17 lifted her to 4-under for the day and just one off the lead. She would finish just one shot out of a playoff with a round of 4-under 68, in which she hit all 18 greens in regulation. Hill made a total of nine birdies 42 pars and just three bogies in the three rounds. She did not record a bogey in her last 40 holes of the tournament. Her 54-hole finish of 210 (-6) bested her previous school-record of 211 which she set at the 2007 NCAA East Regionals which was also played the University Club in Baton Rouge. "Nannette play so steady and so strong all weekend," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "She looked so composed out there and never to seemed to get flustered. She has been working hard this winter on her pre-shot routine and it paid of this weekend. I am really happy for her." As a team, the Demon Deacons recorded a final round 290 on Sunday in very wet conditions. The rain that moved into the Baton Rouge area on Saturday continued throughout the night and forced the implication of the lift-clean-and-place rule for Sunday. Wake posted rounds of 284-296-290=870 (+6) to finish tied for fifth with ACC-foe North Carolina and Louisville. At one point in the final round, Virginia had jumped to 6-under as a team and 10-under for the tournament, opening up a 10-shot lead. The Cavaliers would hold on claim the team title by a 5-shot margin over Tulane, who shot the low round of the tournament on Sunday with a 278. Virginia recorded rounds of 285-287-284=856 (-8).
"We just didn't take advantage of our opportunities today," Dailey continued. "The conditions weren't that bad after it stopped raining and the course played short but we just didn't convert when we had short irons in our hands. You have to give Virginia and Tulane credit. Both teams played really well today." Sophomore Natalie Sheary finished her tournament with a round of 2-over 74 to finish tied for 11th. She opened with a career-best tying 3-under 69 in the first round on Friday and made a total of eight birdies on the weekend. Senior Jean Chua finished the tournament tied for 37th after a final round 75. It was her second straight 75 after opening with a round of 1-under 71. She finished the tournament with seven birdies. Junior Dolores White and freshman Cheyenne Woods had matched each other with rounds of 72-79 on Friday and Saturday and once again, the pair equaled each other with matching 74s on Sunday. Both players finished the tournament tied for 51st. Three players tied for the individual title at 7-under. Arkansas' Lucy Nunn claimed medalist honors in a three-way playoff over Virginia's Calle Nielson and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin. Nunn won on the second playoff hole, which was the 11th hole. The Demon Deacons will return to action at the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia on March 27-29. T5 Wake Forest 284-296-290=870 (+6) |
