Cheyenne Woods Wins The ACC Women's Golf Individual Title
April 17, 2011
GREENSBORO, NC - Wake Forest junior Cheyenne Woods fired a superb bogey-free 3-under 68 on Sunday to seal her first ACC Individual Title. Woods finished the 54-hole event at 5-under par, which was seven shots better than Allie White of North Carolina.
Woods and White started the day tied for the lead at 2-under par. Woods, who was playing five groups ahead of White, pared her first six holes of the day and remained tied with White as the Tar Heels were just starting their round. Woods took her first lead of the day after knocking it to 10-feet on the par-3 seventh and rolling-in the ensuing putt.
White then bogeyed the par-4 sixth and Woods would take advantage. After putting together two nice shots in the par-4 eighth, she knocked home the four-foot birdie putt to extend her lead to three.
Sedgefield Country Club was setup extremely tough on Sunday and one of the toughest pin locations was on the par-3 12th. Woods hit a solid shot into the middle of the green and rolled in the 15-foot birdie putt to take a commanding four-shot lead. After solid pars on Nos. 14 and 15, the Phoenix, Ariz., native got a bit of a good break on the par-5 15th. Her tee shot was headed out-of-boards but struck a tree and dropped back into play. After pitching out, she hit her third shot onto the green about 40 feet away. Her first putt wasn't her best and it left her 20-feet for par. But Woods calmly stroked-in the par putt to hold her four-shot cushion.
Woods closed the round with three solid pars to finish with her third-straight under-par round (70-70-68). White birdied the par-5 15th but would finish with a final round 75. Woods' 68 was the lowest round of the day and it was one of just two rounds under-par on Sunday.
Woods becomes just the third player in school-history to shoot three under-par rounds at the same tournament. Alexandra Armas did it at two different tournaments during the 1995-96 season and Michelle Shin set the school-record this past fall with rounds of 65-70-71 at the Mason Rudolph Challenge.
The 5-under par total not only ties Woods' lowest career 54-hole tournament, it also is a school-record at the ACC Championships. She bested Shin's total of 2-under 211 at last year's event. Woods is also the third-straight Demon Deacon to win the individual title, joining Natalie Sheary who won in 2009 and Shin who won in 2010.
Woods had an idea this could be her week. "I really felt confident this week," said Woods. "I was hitting the ball well in practice coming in and especially today, I was able to hit the ball where I wanted. That was key because these greens are really slick and you needed to hit the ball in the right spots."
As a team, the Demon Deacons finished the tournament with a round of 298, which was the only sub-300 round of the day. That left Wake in fourth place at 52-over par. North Carolina ran away with the team title, winning by 24-shots over Duke. The Tar Heels shot rounds of 289 and 286 in the first two rounds to build a comfortable 24-shot lead through 36-holes.
Sheary, who was playing in her fourth-straight ACC Championship, finished her week with a 5-over 76 and tied for 11th at 14-over par. The West Hartford, Conn., native finished in the top-15 all four years at the ACCs, including a win in 2009.
Shin also finished with a solid round of 2-over 73 and tied for 19th. She opened the final round with two bogeys in the first three holes but played the final 15 holes at even-par.
Freshman Olafia Kristinsdottir had a solid showing in her first ACC Championship, carding rounds of 78-79-81 to finish tied for 30th. Senior Allie Bodemann also finished her career at the ACCs this weekend with rounds of 79-85-83.
The Demon Deacons will now wait until Monday, April 25, to see if they will receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Regionals. The regionals this year are being held in Daytona Beach, Fla., Notre Dame, Ind. and Seattle, Wash., on May 5-7.
