Round One Results | Live Scoring

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Natalie Sheary fired a 2-under 70 and senior Nannette Hill posted a 72 to lead the No. 6 Wake Forest women's golf team in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Central Regional at the Ohio State Scarlet Course.

As a team, the Demon Deacons find themselves in fifth place after an opening round 298.

"We were just a little bit off today but overall, it was a good round," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "This is a very tough golf course and we probably were a bit rusty coming off of final exams but I think we got back into it and got a little confidence back today. Natalie (Sheary) and Nannette (Hill) each played very well, which was good to see."

Sheary, who last time out won the ACC Individual crown, carded her seventh under-par round of the season on Thursday, shooting a 2-under 70. She started the day with two bogies and two birdies on her opening nine to turn in even-par.

A bogey at the par-4 first hole, her tenth of the day, would drop her to 1-over par but birdies at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 7 coming in would bring her home in 34. She is just one-shot off the lead of UCLA's duo of Maria Jose Uribe and Stephanie Kono, who each posted 3-under 69.

"Natalie hit some very good shots today," said Dailey. "She hit her wedges really well almost holed her shot from 90 yards away on No. 16."

Hill started her day with bogies at Nos. 11, 12 and 13 before righting the ship with a birdie at the tricky, par-4 16th. She would turn in 2-over and following back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4 and 5, Hill found herself even for the day. Another birdie at No. 7 got her to 1-under but she closed with a bogey at the ninth for a round of level par.

"Nannette got off to a tough start but she came back really well," Dailey commented. "She had a very good second nine and it was unfortunate to see her three-putt the last hole but nevertheless, it was a good round.

Senior Jean Chua, sophomore Allie Bodemann and freshman Cheyenne Woods rounded out the Demon Deacon scores as each posted a round 6-over 78.

Chua started her day with eight pars and a bogey to turn in 1-over 37 but started the front nine with five straight bogeys to fall to 6-over. She then finished with four strong pars to hopefully, take some momentum into Friday.

Bodemann's round was the exact opposite of Chua's, making five bogies in her first seven holes to turn in 5-over 41. She then made two bogies and a birdie at the par-5 fourth to come home in 37.

Woods had a rocky start, doubling her first hole of the day and fell to 5-over after another double at No. 16. But a birdie on the par-3 17th and a par on No. 18 allowed her to turn in 4-over 40.

On the front nine, Woods struggled to get anything going there either, making three more bogies but she finished with a solid birdie on No. 9 to post 78.

All three players will start the second round tied for 58th.

Behind Uribe and Kono's rounds of 69 and Sydnee Michaels' round of 70, UCLA fired the round of the day, a 4-under 284. The Bruins hold an 11-shot lead over Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Purdue. Oklahoma State is two shots further back after a round of 297 followed by Wake at 298.

The forecast for the Columbus, Ohio, area on Friday is calling for a chance or morning showers giving way to mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon, which is when the Demon Deacons will tee off.

Wake is set to play with the same playing partners, Kent State and Lousiville, Friday afternoon starting at 1:20 p.m.
