Round Two Results

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 6 Wake Forest women's golf team carded a second-round 295 in tough conditions Friday to move up to fourth after 36 holes of the 2009 NCAA Central Regional at the Ohio State Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

The Demon Deacons jumped into second place early after a very strong start but slipped to fifth early in the back nine. But the team responded by going 3-under over the final five holes to finish with a round of 295.

"I'm proud of how the students played today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "The pins were in some tough spots and the greens played hard. This round could have really gotten away from us but the students hung in there down the stretch and put us in good shape heading into tomorrow."

Despite being 19-shots off the lead of UCLA, Wake Forest holds a 15-shot edge over Georgia State and Washington, who are tied for ninth. The top-8 teams at the conclusion of play on Saturday advance on to the NCAA Championships at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.

Seniors Nannette Hill, Jean Chua and freshman Cheyenne Woods each posted rounds of 1-over 73 on Friday to pace the team.

Hill birdied the first hole right out of the gate but bogied No. 3 and doubled No.5 to turn in 2-over 38. She then made three birdies and two bogeys over her final nine to card come home in 1-under 35 for a round of 73. She will start the final round tied for fifth.

Woods made two birdies and three bogies in the round while Chua started her day with back-to-back bogies at Nos. 1 and 2 but regrouped and played the next 16-holes at 1-under par with a pair of birdies.

Woods and Chua also both shot 78 on Thursday and are currently tied for 24th through 36 holes.

Natalie Sheary, who shot a 2-under 70 in the opening round, started her second round 1-over through nine holes and was two-shots off the individual lead. She would then stumble a bit midway through the back nine, making double at No. 12 and back-to-back bogies at Nos. 14 and 15 to drop back to 5-over on the day. The sophomore would close her round strong with a birdie at No. 17 to finish with a round of 76.

Sheary is one-shot behind Hill at 2-over par and will start the final round on Saturday tied for 8th.

Sophomore Allie Bodemann followed her round of 78 yesterday with a 4-over 76 on Friday. She opened with six-straight pars but found trouble at the seventh, making a double-bogey. She then made three more bogies in the next six holes to fall to 5-over but bounced-back with a birdie at No. 15 to also finish with a 76.

UCLA continues to lead the tournament after posting a round of 290 on Friday. The Bruins have a 10-shot lead over Purdue thanks in large part to the duo of Maria Jose Uribe and Stephanie Kono, who are each 5-under par through 36 holes and lead the individual race by one-shot.

Wake Forest will start the final round Saturday morning at 8:10 a.m. off the tenth tee.
