May 19, 2009 Live Scoring | Round 1 Results | Photo Gallery OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Nannette Hill made a total of 14 pars and two birdies in her round of even-par 72 to lead the Wake Forest women's golf team in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Women's Golf Championships. On a sun-drenched afternoon at the long and hilly Caves Valley Golf Club, the Demon Deacons got off to a good start but dropped a few shots coming in and wound-up posting an opening round of 303 (+15) and are currently tied for seventh. "It wasn't our best round today," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "We gave a few shots back there at the end which was a little disappointing. We got two really nice rounds from Nannette (Hill) and Allie (Bodemann) but we need to get everyone else playing well too. We'll go back out there tomorrow and see if we can improve. I think the scores will get better each day and there is still a lot of golf to be played." Like Hill, sophomore Allie Bodemann posted a very good opening round of 1-over 73 on Tuesday. The sophomore birdied her first two holes of the day and carded a total of three birdies on the day. Hill made one birdie and one bogey on each of her nines for a round of even-par. She made a bogey at the par-3 12th, her third hole of the day to fall to 1-over but made a good two-putt par on the 16th and hit a strong drive on No. 17 setting herself up for a chance to reach the par-5 green in two. Her 3-wood bounded up the hill and rolled just over the right edge of the green. The ensuing chip from across the green hit the flag and finished just three-feet away, setting-up her first birdie of the day. She then made seven-straight pars before three solid shots on the par-5 seventh set her up for yet another birdie, moving her to 1-under through 16 holes. A nice par at the tough par-3 eighth was followed by a good drive at the ninth that just rolled through the left side of the fairway and buried itself in the rough. Hill chopped the ball up near the green and after a decent chip, she narrowly missed her par-putt, leaving her with a level-par round
Hill also got off to a good start at last year's NCAA Championships in New Mexico, firing a career-best 5-under 67. She is currently just two shots off the lead and is in a tie for third heading into the second round. After starting with a pair of birdies on Nos. 10 and 11, Bodemann got a tough break on the par-3 15th, as her ball rolled up against the lip of the bunker. She was not able to play a shot at the green and was forced to chip-out backwards. She went on to make a double-bogey and fall back to even-par. However, the Palm City, Fla., native bounced back with a nice birdie at No. 18 to turn at 1-under 35. She then opened the front with four pars before a bogie at No. 5 dropped her back to even. Two more pars at Nos. 6 and 7 were followed by a three-putt bogey at No. 8 and a solid par at the long, uphill ninth to finish with a 73. Bodemann has now averaged 74.25 strokes per round over her last eight tournament rounds. Freshman Cheyenne Woods, who was the top Demon Deacon finisher at Caves Valley in September for the NCAA Preview, made six pars and three bogies on each nine to card a round of 78 on Tuesday. She is currently in a tie for 60th at 6-over par. Sophomore Natalie Sheary, the 2009 ACC Individual Champion, got off to a tough start, making four bogies and a triple-bogey on her opening nine. She turned in 43 but made a pair of birdies on the front nine and finished with a round of 80. It was her second-straight round in the 80s, as she carded an 84 in the final round of the NCAA Regionals two weeks ago. Senior Jean Chua went out in 3-over 39 but had a rough second nine, posting a 43 and finished with an opening round 81. Denver posted the round of the day with a 6-over 294 and holds a two-shot lead over UCLA. Both of those teams played in the afternoon wave. North Carolina carded the low-round in the morning, shooting an 11-over 299 and is currently third. Defending champion Southern Cal is in fourth place after round of 301 while Arizona State, the top-ranked team in the nation, and LSU round out the top-5 after rounds of 302. The Tar Heels were led by their standout freshman Catherine O'Donnell, who fired a round of 2-under 70, and is tied for the individual lead with Denver's Stephanie Sherlock, who made five birdies in her round of 70. Caves Valley is in immaculate shape this week but the hilly terrain and long rough is making the course play tough. In perfect scoring conditions on Tuesday, the scoring average for the field was 77.92. The Deacons played with Tennessee and LSU in the opening round and the same three teams will be paired together again on Wednesday. The teams will see if they can take advantage of the conditions in the morning as the first tee-time is set for 8:00 am off the front nine.
