After posting a round of 303 in the afternoon on Tuesday, the Deacons went out in the first group off the front nine this morning but got off to a slow start. The team was 9-over through the first eight holes but regrouped and finished the last ten holes at just 4-over. "We played a little bit better today but we still left a few shots out there," said head coach Dianne Dailey. "We got off to a really slow start and I'm happy with the way the students hung in there on the back nine. We could have let things get away from us there in the middle of the round but they stayed focused and finished up well." "I think we'll be ok heading into tomorrow," Dailey continued. "Everyone has a good attitude and their confident about their games. We just need to stay patient because there is still two rounds to go." When the Deacs left the course after their morning round, they were in a tie for 15th but plenty of teams had yet to even start their rounds. The winds picked up a bit throughout the afternoon and the scores went up. Wake moved up to seventh place by days end and at 27-over par, is now just five shots out of third place. Hill made three birdies in her first five holes to jump to 3-under par and was atop the leaderboard. She bogied the par-4 sixth to fall back to 2-under and then made five straight pars to put herself 2-under through 11 holes. The 12th is a picturesque downhill par-3 that plays 155 yards. Hill stuck her approach and made her fourth birdie of the day to climb back to 3-under and into a tie for the lead. However, she narrowly missed her par putt at No. 15 after a nice explosion shot from the front bunker and then made a second-straight bogey at No. 16 to slip back to 1-under. A pair of pars to finish gave her a round of 71.
"I was hitting the ball really good all day," said Hill. "I had some tap-in birdies early on that helped me get going but overall I've been playing pretty conservative. This is a course where you have to let the birdies come to you and not try to force anything. If you get too aggressive, you can three-putt or put yourself in a bad spot real easily. You just have to play smart out here and try to hit fairways and greens." Hill is one of just four players under-par after 36-holes. She is tied for second and is just two shots in back of Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA. Uribe made five birdies and an eagle in her round of 6-under 66, which was the lowest of the tournament so far. Sophomore Natalie Sheary, who opened with a round of 80, got off to another tough start, going 4-over through the first seven. But the West Hartford, Conn., native birdied the tough par-4 ninth and made two more birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 to move to just 1-over for the day. She followed back-to-back bogies at Nos. 14 and 15 with the first birdie of the day at No. 16. The 16th played as the toughest hole Wednesday and has yielded just 11 birdies through two rounds. Sheary would bogey the final hole to finish with an even-par back nine and a round of 3-over 75. She is currently tied for 73rd at 11-over par. Freshman Cheyenne Woods birded her second hole of the day but just couldn't get much else to fall the rest of the round. Still, the young standout managed a solid round of 76 and is tied for 65th through two rounds. Senior Jean Chua was another one of the Deacons that came out of the gate slowly, bogeying five of the first six but regrouped with a birdie on No. 9 and two more on the back nine to finish with a round of 78. She is a total of 15-over for the tournament and is tied for 95th. Sophomore Allie Bodemann carded a round of 1-over 73 on Tuesday but struggled to get in a groove early on in her round on Wednesday. She found herself 7-over through the first eight holes but made a birdie at No. 9 and picked up another at No. 17 to post a round of 10-over 82. She is tied with Sheary for 73rd at 11-over. Behind Uribe's sensational 66, UCLA has taken the team lead after a tournament-best round of 5-over 293. The Bruins hold a 7-shot edge over fellow Pac Ten-rival Southern Cal. Denver, the first round leader, is currently third at 22-over while Arizona State, Oklahoma State and North Carolina are all tied for fourth at 24-over. The Tar Heels were the only team in the top-10 that played in the afternoon wave on Wednesday. The wind picked up this afternoon and the higher scores were a direct reflection. Wake Forest will be paired with its ACC-foe North Carolina as well as the Tigers of LSU in the third round on Thursday. The teams will tee-off at 12:50 Thursday afternoon off the back nine. Live scoring of the final two rounds can be found on www.golfstat.com and a live webcast of the final three holes on both Thursday and Friday will be available on the women's golf page at www.NCAASports.com.
