OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Wake Forest's round on Thursday of the 2009 NCAA Women's Golf Championships can only be described as a grind. The Demon Deacons started well but faded as the day went on and posted a round of 318 to slip back to 13th place through 54 holes.

The Deacs started out even-par through the first four holes and had climbed to fourth in the team standings but a few loose shots midway through the first nine started Wake in the wrong direction.

Individually, senior Jean Chua had the round of the day going for the Deacs, as she made three birdies and three bogies through her first 12 holes.

She then made three-straight pars on holes 4, 5 and 6 before her first hiccup of the round. After two good shots on the par-5 seventh, Chua's third shot came up short and she would chip on and three-putt for a double-bogey. Another double at the par-3 eighth was followed by a bogey at the ninth to finish with a round of 77.

Chua is now 20-over through 54 holes and is tied for 87th.

Fellow senior Nannette Hill started the day just two shots off the lead and now finds herself six-shots back after a roller coaster round. She started her day with a pair of bogies at Nos. 11 and 13 but got one of them back with a nice birdie at the tough par-4 16th.

However, Hill would double-bogie No. 18 and made another bogey at No. 1 to slip to four-over for the day. She parred No. 2 and then made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 3 and 4 to climb to 2-over for the day and was in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard at 1-over for the tournament.

But the roller coaster round continued as Hill bogied the next three holes and got a very unfortunate break at the par-3 eighth. She tugged her tee shot just left of the green and the ball bounced off the top of a mound, down the hill, off the cart path and right-up next to a tree. She would have to take an unplayable-lie and proceeded to make a double-bogey five.

Hill finished with a round of 79 on Thursday and is currently 6-over through 54 holes. She is tied for eighth at the moment and is 6-shots off the lead of USC's Jennifer Song, who shot a 1-under 71 in the third round.

Freshman Cheyenne Woods made a total of four birdies in her round on Thursday but also made a total of eight bogeys and finished with a 79. Her three-day total of 233 has her in a tie for 64th heading into action on Friday.

Sophomore Natalie Sheary started the day with a nice birdie at the par-4 tenth but that was about the only thing that went right on Thursday for the West Hartford native. She made three bogies and a double to close out her first nine in 40 and then made seven more bogeys to come home in 43 for a round of 83. She is 22-over through three rounds and is currently tied for 97th.

Sophomore Allie Bodemann rounded out the Demon Deacon scorers in round three with an 86. She started out 8-over through the first four holes and posted her lone birdie of the day at No. 18, her ninth hole of the afternoon.

UCLA came into the third round with a 7-shot lead but carded a 304 on Thursday and is now third with a round to go. Southern Cal fired a 294 and holds a 1-shot lead on fellow Pac Ten rival Arizona State, who shot the round of the day at 3-over 291.

Southern Cal's Jennifer Song (E) leads the individual race by two shots over Maria Hernandez of Purdue and third round leader Maria Jose Uribe of UCLA. Alice Kim, who is playing as an individual from UC Davis, fired a round of 2-under 70 on Thursday and is currently fourth at 3-over.

Wake Forest will tee-off at 8:50 am Friday morning and will be playing with Georgia and Michigan State. So far this week, most of the lower scores have come from the morning wave so the Deacs will look to post a low score and see what happens.
