KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Wake Forest women’s golf team opened the 2017-18 season Monday with the first two rounds of the Ocean Course Invitational at Kiawah Island’s famed course. The Demon Deacons are 6-over through the first 36 holes to finish the opening day in fifth place.

On the course that hosted the 2012 PGA Championship and will host the event again in 2021, no team finished the first day in red numbers. Ole Miss holds the 36-hole lead at even par, with Florida State one shot back and North Carolina and NC State tied for third at 3-over.

All-American Jennifer Kupcho started her junior season strong by shooting 69 and 68 to end Monday at 9-under and take a two-shot lead into the final round. She was the only player in the 87-player field to shoot both rounds in the 60s on the par-73 course.

Two other players, each making their Demon Deacon debut, are in the top 10 after 36 holes. Siyun Liu, who transferred to Wake Forest after playing her freshman season at Illinois, is tied for fifth place at 1-under after rounds of 74 and 71 to finish at 1-under. Freshman Emilia Migliaccio made her collegiate debut with rounds of 72 and 74 to finish at even par, tied for ninth place.

“We got off to a good start today,” said head coach Dianne Dailey. “Jennifer continued her stellar play by shooting 9-under today. She hit some very impressive shots on a difficult course. Emilia and Swing were also solid in their first rounds as Deacons, combining to shoot 1-under. We still have work to do but overall it was a good start to the season.”

The tournament concludes with the third round on Tuesday.
