HANAHAN, S.C. - Junior Sierra Sims and sophomore Erica Herr fired rounds under par to lead the Wake Forest women’s golf team at the first round of the Cougar Classic hosted by College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall.

The Demon Deacons are in third place after Sunday’s opening round at the Cougar Classic with a 1-over 289 as a team. Arkansas holds the lead at 6-under 282 and UCF is in second place with an even-par score of 288.

Sierra Sims birdied three of her final six holes to card a 3-under 69 for the opening round. She made the turn at 2-under but struggled on 10 and 11 with a pair of bogeys. She finished the round with a birdie on 18 to drop to 3-under. She is currently tied for third with UCF’s Ashley Holder. They are one stroke back of co-leaders Taylor Tomlinson and Gaby Lopez.

Sierra Sims picked up where she left off at this event last year when she finished second as an individual, the best ever finish by a Demon Deacon in the event. She posted a 54-hole score of 10-under 206. That score ties Michelle Shin for the 54-hole school record which she set at the 2010 Mason Rudolph Challenge.

Herr is tied for eighth with two rounds to play. She carded a 1-under 71 on Sunday and is tied with six other players in eighth place. The sophomore followed a birdie on seven with a bogey on eight to make the turn at 1-under. She played an even par back nine to wrap up the day at 1-under.

Senior Mariana Sims also birdied 18 to finish the opening round with a 2-over 74. She is tied for 37th in the individual standings. A pair of freshmen rounded out the standings for Wake Forest. Antonia Eberhard carded a 3-over 75 and Jennifer Kupcho posted a 6-over 78.

The Demon Deacons will tee off for Monday’s second round beginning at 10 a.m. Wake Forest is paired with College of Charleston and North Carolina.
