Oct. 25, 2009 WILMINGTON, NC - Despite a final round 77, sophomore Cheyenne Woods finished a solid week in a tie for third, which is the best finish of her career, to lead to Wake Forest women's golf team to a seventh place finish at the Landfall Tradition. Woods opened the tournament with rounds of 70-69 and held a one-shot lead at 5-under par heading into Sunday's round but like the rest of the team, she just didn't have the final round she was looking for. The Phoenix, Ariz., native made three double-bogeys and one birdie on Sunday at the Landfall Country Club to card a 5-over 77. She finished the weekend even-par and tied for third which is the best finish of her career. "Cheyenne had a tremendous tournament," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "She just played so well around the greens this weekend which has really been her biggest improvement over the last year. She's always had the athletic ability to hit the ball well but her short game has improved so much. She knows she has the game to compete at the top-level now and I think that will help her confidence in the future." Woods finishes the fall with the lowest stroke average on the team at 72.8 with seven of her 12 rounds at par or better. Last year as a freshman, Woods had just three rounds all season at or under par. As a team, the Deacons shot a 1-under 287 on Saturday to climb into second place but just couldn't get anything going on Sunday, shooting a final round 304 to slip back to seventh place at 31-over par. "We just weren't sharp today," said Dailey. "We put ourselves in great position with Saturday's round but we just didn't have that follow-up round we needed. Overall though, I thought it was a good weekend for the students getting to play four rounds on the championship course. We know we can shoot under par so we just need to work on doing that more consistently in the spring." Senior Dolores White also finished off a very good weekend with a 3-over 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 17th. She grinded her way to a 76 on Friday but then followed that with a season-low 2-under 70 on Saturday. She finishes the fall with a 75.1 stroke average through nine rounds. "I was glad to see Dolores have a good week this week," Dailey said. "She has played well all season but just wasn't able to break through until Saturday. I think that will help her confidence heading into the spring." After opening with an 81 on Friday, freshman Michelle Shin bounced-back with a round of 76 on Saturday and a good round of 2-over 74 on Sunday to finish tied for 54th. Shin made a bogey at her first hole of the day but hung in there and played the final 17 at just one over. Junior Natalie Sheary also finished the weekend tied for 54th after a final round 79 while freshman Stephanie Kim shot a 78 on Sunday to finish two shots behind Sheary and Shin at 17-over. Duke came into the final round in fifth place but carded one of two even-par rounds on the day to finish at 17-over to win the team title by one shot over second round leader UCLA and Auburn. It was the first victory for the Blue Devils in just under two years. Auburn's Cydney Clanton shot her third-straight round of 2-under 70 to win the individual title by five shots over Virginia's Brittany Altomare. The Deacons have wrapped-up the fall portion of the schedule and will resume play in February at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
