Cheyenne Woods Signs with Wake Forest
Nov. 20, 2007
Wake Forest University women's golf coach Dianne Dailey has announced that Cheyenne Woods of Phoenix, AZ has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Demon Deacons. Woods, who will graduate from Xavier College High School in Phoenix in the spring, will enter Wake as a freshman in the fall of 2008.
Cheyenne Woods is the niece of Tiger Woods. She is the daughter of Susan and Earl Woods, Jr.
Cheyenne is the two-time Arizona Class 5A Division I medalist. She won the 2007 title on Nov. 6 by shooting rounds of 69-70 for a 139. In 2006, she finished first with two rounds of 68. Woods was fifth in the state tournament as a sophomore and third as a freshman. Xavier won the state title in each of her four years.
"We're really looking forward to having Cheyenne on the team," said Dailey. "She'll be able to help us out quite a bit. She's compiled a solid junior record and that's going to set her up really well. Her game is improving all the time so by the time she gets to Wake Forest, she will definitely have the tools to make a tremendous contribution to the team."
Cheyenne was introduced to golf by her grandfather, Earl Sr. She received instruction in the same garage where Earl Sr. taught Tiger how to play.
Cheyenne has had a prolific amateur career. Along with helping Xavier to four state titles, she has won the Junior Golf of Arizona Yuma City Championship and has claimed more than 30 amateur golf titles since she started entering tournaments at age 7. Among her tournament championships are the American Junior Golf Association's Nike Golf Junior, the Bill Dickey Invitational and the prestigious Big I Junior Classic. She also claimed two U.S. Kids Golf World Championships.
Woods, who played for Sister Lynn Winsor at Xavier, is currently ranked 47th in the Golfweek Junior Girls rankings.
