SOUTH BEND, Ind. - No. 20 Wake Forest women's soccer defeated No. 22 Notre Dame for the first time in program history Friday with a 2-1 victory at Alumni Stadium.

Entering the contest, the Irish (6-4-2, 2-2-0 ACC) held a 6-0-1 series advantage over the Demon Deacons (9-2-1, 3-1-0 ACC), with the lone tie coming in a 1-1 draw on Oct. 3, 2013.

The Deacs also picked up their third conference victory on the season, the most since 2014 when they also tallied three ACC wins.

After a tough start for both teams, Maddie Huster put the Deacs on the board in the 44th minute. Sarah Medina sent a quick pass to Huster, who beat a diving keeper to find the back of the net. The goal gave the Deacs a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

However, the Irish came out of the break hot and evened the score one-all in the 48th minute off a header from Ginny McGowan. After a scramble at the net, Preston had managed to keep the ball at bay but McGowan managed the header off Preston's glove to even the score.

The teams battled it out locked in a 1-1 tie until Vicky Krug stole the ball in the 88th minute and shot from 14 yards out to give the Deacs the 2-1 victory.

Though the Deacs trailed 4-3 in shots the first half, they out-shot the Irish 6-2 in the second half to finish with a 9-6 advantage. Peyton Perea led the way for the Deacs with three shots, one on goal, while Bayley Feist and Hannah Betfort each had two shots.

Lindsay Preston made three saves in goal, picking up her ninth victory in net this season.

Up next, the Demon Deacons return to Spry Stadium to face Virginia Tech on Oct. 5. The match is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
