WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 16 Wake Forest (8-3-0, 1-2-0 ACC) twice cut the North Carolina (11-1-0, 4-0-0 ACC) lead to one, but the Deacons were unable to score the equalizer, dropping a 4-2 decision to the second-ranked Tar Heels on Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd of 1,309 at Spry Stadium.

The two goals scored by Wake Forest marked the first goals the Deacons had scored against North Carolina since the 2002 season. The two goals also equal the most goals Wake Forest has scored in a game against the Tar Heels.

North Carolina out-shot the Deacons 23-5, including a 10-3 advantage in the first half. The Tar Heels had 12 shots on goal, compared to three for Wake Forest.

Casey Nogueira led the way for North Carolina, scoring three goals and adding an assist for seven points in the game. Amy Smerdzinski and Jill Hutchinson each scored a goal, accounting for the two Wake Forest scores in the contest.

Laura Morse made a career-high eight saves in the game and allowed four goals. Anna Rodenbough and Ashlyn Harris each played 45 minutes in the game, with both players allowing one goal. Harris made the one save for UNC in the game.

North Carolina scored first, tallying a goal in the 15th minute. Nogueira's shot from 10 yards out found the right side of the net to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 advantage. Tobin Heath was credited with the assist on the play.

UNC added on to the lead just over five minutes later. Nogueira played a pass to Yael Averbuch, who attempted a long shot from 27 yards out that went in the right side of the net.

The Deacons got on the board just before the end of the first half, scoring in the 42nd minute. Sarah Winslow played a pass to Hutchinson. Hutchinson's strike from 25 yards out beat the keeper on the left side to cut the Tar Heel lead to 2-1 at the half.

Neither team was able to register a goal in the first part of the second half. North Carolina scored for the third time in the game in the 76th minute. Nikki Washington passed the ball to Nogueira and her shot from seven yards out snuck into the upper right part of the net.

The Deacons again cut the lead to one with just under 10 minutes remaining. Off a corner kick from Hutchinson, Farrell flicked the ball to the far post. Smerdzinski was waiting near the right post and scored from point-blank range to make the score 3-2.

North Carolina added a final insurance goal in the 84th minute as Nogueira scored for the third time in the game. Nogueira made a nice move to get around a defender 18 yards outside the goal. Her shot from 10 yards out found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-2.

With the victory, North Carolina now leads the overall series 22-1-0, including winning the last 12 meetings in the series.

The Deacons are back in action on Thursday as they hit the road for the first time in conference play, traveling to Durham, N.C., to face Duke at 7 p.m.
