BLACKSBURG, Va. - No. 19 Wake Forest gave No. 6 Virginia Tech all that it could handle, but the Hokies scored with a minute left in the first overtime period to notch a 2-1 win over the Demon Deacons at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va. Thursday.

With the loss, the Demon Deacons fall to 8-4-2 (3-4-2 ACC) while the red-hot Hokies improve to 12-1-2 (7-1-1 ACC).

Kendall Fischlein had given Wake Forest the lead early with a well-placed strike in the 11th-minute, but Virginia Tech evened things up in the 26th minute thanks to Shannon Mayrose's first goal of the season.

Neither side was able to find another goal in regulation with Aubrey Bledsoe making five saves in the second half to keep the Demon Deacons in the game.

Tiernan broke Wake Forest hearts with her 99th-minute goal, beating the offside trap to collect a pass wide open in front of net, finishing calmly past Bledsoe from eight yards out.

Fischlein's goal, her second of the season, was a one of the best the Deacons have scored all season. She cut in from the right, juking a defender before unleashing a lofted left-footed shot that curled into the top-right corner.

Fischlein, Sarah Teegarden and Jessica Mandarich tied for the Wake Forest lead with two shots apiece.

The Demon Deacons will play their penultimate road match of the season on Sunday when they head south to face Clemson. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks and ESPN3.
