COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Wake Forest senior Kaley Fountain assisted on a pair of first half goals and added a goal of her own in the second half to lift the 11th-ranked Demon Deacons to a 3-1 win at No. 12 Maryland on Thursday night at Ludwig Field.

With the victory, Wake Forest improves to 13-3-2 and 5-2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Maryland drops to 12-3-2 and 4-3-2 in league play. With the results of other conference games on Thursday, Wake Forest now sits in fourth place in the league with 17 points.

The Demon Deacons had control for much of the match, thanks to two first half goals. Jill Hutchinson staked Wake Forest to an early lead with a goal in the third minute, while Caitlin Farrell added a goal with 40 seconds left in the half. After Maryland cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 75th minute, the Deacs added a third goal from Fountain in the 86th minute.

Hutchinson's goal was her team-leading 12th of the season. It also was her 34th career goal, tying the Wake Forest school record, which is also held by Sarah Kozey. Hutchinson now has 27 points on the season, which is tied for the team lead.

Fountain tallied four points in the game to bring her season total to 27. The Austin, Texas, native scored her 10th goal of the year and recorded her sixth and seventh assists of the season.

Farrell scored for the first time in her senior season. The goal was the fifth for the defender from Ft. Myers, Fla.

Amanda Barasha earned the win in goal for Wake Forest, tying a career-high with six saves and allowing one goal. Mary Casey allowed three goals and made four saves for Maryland.

Ashley Grove had the only score of the night for Maryland, scoring her seventh goal of the season. Molly Dreska, Danielle Hubka and Jasmyne Spencer tied for the team high with three shots.

The shots in the match were nearly even, with Maryland holding a slight 16-15 edge. Each team had seven shots on goal. The Terrapins had three corner kicks, compared to two for the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest struck first with a goal in the fourth minute. Kaley Fountain played a pass down the left side that found Hutchinson inside the 18-yard box. Hutchinson chipped a shot over the charging Maryland keeper for her 12th goal of the season.

Hubka had the first quality scoring chance for Maryland in the 13th minute. Spencer got open on the right side and crossed a pass to Hubka on the left side of the 18-yard box. Hubka attempted a shot, but Barasha was there to make a sliding kick save to send the ball away.

The Terps had another good chance to tie the game in the 23rd minute. Spencer was able to get past the Demon Deacon defense and had a good look at goal. However, Barasha was able to make a diving save to keep Maryland off the scoreboard.

The Demon Deacons doubled their advantage with a goal in the final minute of the half. Fountain sent a free kick from near midfield that found the head of Farrell on the right side of the six-yard box. Farrell's flick header found the left side of the net to put Wake in front 2-0.

Maryland had the first chance of the second half in the 51st minute. Hubka stole an attempted clear from Wake and dribbled in all alone with Barasha. Hubka sent a shot from the right side of the 18, but her attempt rolled just wide of the left post to keep the Terrapins scoreless.

The Terrapins had another quality chance in the 57th minute. Spencer played a cross from the right side of the field and found Caitlin McDowell inside the 18-yard box. McDowell's shot from 12 yards out sailed over the cross bar and went out for a goal kick.

Wake Forest had its first chance of the second period in the 63rd minute. Jordan Feger played a beautiful through ball and found Fountain making a run down the center of the field. Fountain had a good look at the goal, but sent her shot from 17 yards just wide of the right post.

Fountain had another good chance just two minutes later, but again her shot went just wide. Feger played another nice pass to Fountain on the right side of the 18. Fountain's shot rolled just wide of the left post to keep the score at 2-0.

Maryland cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 75th minute. Grove was able to collect a pass on the right side of the 18-yard box. Grove's shot from 16 yards out found the left side of the net to put the Terps on the scoreboard.

Wake had a chance to regain a two-goal lead in the 83rd minute. Marisa Park played a pass to Fountain in the center of the field. Fountain dribbled left and attempted a left-footed shot that went off the right post and was cleared away.

The Deacs tallied for the third time in the 86th minute. Meier played a pass from the right corner and found Fountain on the right side of the 18. Fountain dribbled in and found the roof of the net from six yards out for her 10th goal of the season.

Wake did a good job of possessing the ball over the final three minutes of the match and held on for the 3-1 win.

Wake Forest closes the regular season on Sunday, traveling to No. 7 Boston College. Kickoff against the Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
