Women's Soccer Season Ended by North Carolina

The Wake Forest women's soccer season was stopped by North Carolina, 3-1, in the second round of the NCAA College Cup on Sunday in Chapel Hill, NC. The loss is the third time the Demon Deacons have fallen to the Tar Heels in 19 days.

With less than six minutes left in the first half, Tar Heel Catherine Reddick shot the ball through a defensive wall on a free kick, which bounced off the cross bar and dropped into the back of the net. North Carolina's offense created 11 shot opportunities for the half, while Wake only had one attempt by Melanie Schneider. At the break, the Tar Heels led the Deacs, 1-0.

North Carolina upped the tempo in the second half, scoring its second goal within the first two minutes of action by Sara Randolph on passes from Elizabeth Ball and Lindsay Tarpley. The Deacs got on the board in the 60th minute, with Joline Charlton booting the ball into the net with help from Melanie Schneider and Katherine Winstead. At the 82:20 mark, the Tar Heels' Anne Morrell sealed the victory, sending the ball into the upper right hand corner of the net on assists from Reddick and Tarpley.

For the Demon Deacons, keeper Erin Regan recorded two saves, while Jenni Branam tallied three for the Tar Heels. North Carolina held Wake Forest to five shots, while being credited with 20. Wake Forest ends the 2002 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, while North Carolina goes into the NCAA third round with a 19-1-4 mark.
