WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Wake Forest women's soccer players Amy Smerdzinski and Alena Thom will participate in a 10-day tryout with the St. Louis Athletica of the Women's Professional Soccer league.

The trial, which lasts for 10 days, begins on Saturday. After the tryout, Smerdzinski and Thom will learn if they progress to the contract phase.

Smerdzinski played in 85 games during her career at Wake Forest. A 2008 All-ACC second team selection and All-Southeast second team by Soccer Buzz, Smerdzinski scored 16 goals and seven assists during her time as a Demon Deacon. She recently traveled to Spain with the United States U-23 Women's Soccer Team and earned her first international playing experience, seeing time in a pair of games.

A four-year letterwinner at Wake Forest, Thom earned All-ACC honors during her senior year in Winston-Salem. Thom scored 12 goals and 13 assists at Wake Forest, while playing in 82 games. She most recently played professionally in Sweden, playing for Danmarks IF in Sweden's North Division I League.

The Women's Professional Soccer league will begin play in March. Teams for the 2009 season are Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. Teams in Atlanta and Philadelphia will be added for the 2010 season.
