Sept. 6, 2010

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's soccer players Katie Stengel and Rachel Nuzzolese were each recognized for their performances in last weekend's ACC/SEC Challenge, with Stengel being named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week and Nuzzolese being selected by CollegeSoccer360.com as a Primetime Performer of the Week.

The two freshman forwards were outstanding in the Deacons' wins over LSU and Kentucky en route to winning the ACC/SEC Challenge title. Nuzzolese had a four-point night during Wake Forest's 3-1 victory over LSU on Friday, assisting on the Deacons' first two goals and netting an insurance goal in the 90th minute to seal the win. Stengel scored the game-winning goal against both LSU and Kentucky, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute against the Tigers and scoring the Deacs first goal in their 2-0 victory over the Wildcats.

The two players were the ACC's lone representatives on both teams.

In weekend action at the ACC/SEC Challenge, the Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead over the Tigers when Nuzzolese's corner kick found her former club teammate Caralee Keppler in the box, who buried the ball into the back of the net. After LSU had tied the game at 1-1, the Deacs answered back less than two minutes later, Stengel ran onto a pretty through ball from Nuzzolese on the right side of the box and chipped the ball over the charging keeper and into the net to give Wake a 2-1 lead. Nuzzolese scored a goal of her own in the 90th minute, when she caught the LSU goalie off her line and lofted a shot from 21 yards to put Wake ahead 3-1.

Against Kentucky, Stengel scored in the 14th minute when she gathered in the rebound from Jackie Logue's shot off the crossbar and calmly finished it into the open net.

Nuzzolese's first five games have been as impressive as any from a Wake Forest freshman in recent memory. The Melville, N.Y. native is the first player in school history to score a goal in each of her first four games, and she currently leads the team with four goals and 11 points.

Stengel has also had a terrific start, leading the team in game-winning goals with two, and ranking second behind Nuzzolese with three goals and seven points.

The Demon Deacons will travel to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend to face Vanderbilt and Villanova in the Hilton Garden Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech. Wake will kick off against the Commodores on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. before facing the Wildcats on Sept. 12 at 11:30 a.m.
