Stengel, Logue Make Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week
Sept. 19, 2011
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Katie Stengel and Jackie Logue were named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week for their efforts in the No. 13 Demon Deacons' victories over No. 3 Florida State and South Carolina. Stengel scored three goals in last week's wins, while Logue captained the Wake Forest back line to two shutouts, in addition to earning an assist against the Seminoles. In front of a national television audience, Stengel scored both Wake Forest goals in the Deacs' 2-0 triumph over the No. 3 Seminoles last Thursday, their highest ranked win since 2004. Her first score came just before halftime when she ran onto a long ball from Alisha Woodson and hit a low one-time shot past FSU keeper Kelsey Wys. She picked up an insurance goal in the 57th minute, heading a well-struck cross from Jackie Logue into the back of the net. Stengel followed up the performance with Wake Forest's second goal in its 2-0 road victory over South Carolina, executing a pretty one-two combination with Ally Berry before finishing one-on-one with the Gamecock goalkeeper. The sophomore from Melbourne, Fla. has now scored an overwhelming 11 goals and 25 points this season, with both marks leading the ACC by a healthy margin. She is on pace to shatter the Wake Forest single-season records of 16 goals and 37 points that she set as a freshman last year.
Logue started at outside back in both Wake Forest games last weekend and helped shutdown both Florida State and South Carolina offensively. The Seminoles and Gamecocks managed to combine for only three shots on goal in the two contests. Logue and the rest of the Deacon defenders have already recorded six shutouts this season, and Wake Forest's 0.44 goals against average is the second-lowest in the ACC. Logue also helped out offensively last week, playing a perfect cross to Katie Stengel for the Deacons' second goal against the Noles. Logue, Stengel and the rest of the Demon Deacons will continue ACC play this week, traveling to take on NC State on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. before returning home for a 1 p.m. fixture against Miami on Sept. 25 at Spry Stadium. |
