WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Wake Forest women’s soccer team continues play in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday when it battles West Virginia in the second round. Start time at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).

The Demon Deacons will look to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999. Wake has been eliminated in the second round each of the last three seasons, including a 1-0 loss to James Madison last year.

Wake Forest (14-5-2) advanced to the second round with a 2-0 win against Kennesaw State on Friday. Junior midfielder Casey Luckhurst scored the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Deacs to the victory.

Seniors Kaley Fountain and Jill Hutchinson are tied for the team lead in points for the Demon Deacons on the season with 29. Fountain has scored 10 goals and added a team-high nine assists, while Hutchinson has tallied a team-leading 13 goals and three assists.

Amanda Barasha has a 0.75 goals against average on the season, allowing 10 goals and making 40 saves in 1202 minutes. Laura Morse has seen 752 minutes in goal in 2009. Morse has a 0.96 GAA, giving up eight goals and making 19 stops. Barasha and Morse combined for the shutout in Wake’s 2-0 win against Kennesaw State.

West Virginia brings a 10-6-6 record into Sunday’s second round game. The Mountaineers defeated Loyola (Md.) 2-0 on Friday behind goals from Carolyn Blank and Bry McCarthy. West Virginia has won three of its last four games.


 

 

The Mountaineer offense is led by Megan Mischler, who leads the team with five goals and 12 points on the season. Blank has scored four goals and added an assist. Caroline Szwed holds the team lead in assists with six.

Kerri Butler has recorded a 0.56 goals against average on the year, surrendering 13 goals and making 69 saves in 2,082 minutes of play. Butler recorded her 12th shutout of the season against Loyola.

Wake Forest and West Virginia have met just once previously. The Demon Deacons claimed a 2-1 victory against the Mountaineers during the 2007 regular season.

Ticket prices for the second round of the NCAA Tournament are $5 for students and seniors and $7 for adults. Please note that fans sitting on the hill by Polo Rd. will also be charged. All seats are general admission and fans are encouraged to arrive early.
