WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Andrea Retolaza and Brigita Bercyte earned their first doubles victory of the season Sunday afternoon, but Wake Forest was swept in singles by East Tennessee State at the Wake Forest Winter Classic.
Retolaza and Bercyte gave the Deacs their lone victory in doubles play. Despite being challenged in nearly every game, the duo dropped only one on their way to an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 position.
In singles play, both Gardiner (No. 1) and Karen Forman (No. 4) dropped incredibly hard-fought, three-set matches. Forman looked fantastic in her first set against ETSU's Lyn Yee Choo, easily taking the set by a 6-1 margin. Choo rebounded in the second and third sets, though, and claimed the match 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 after more than two hours on the court.
In a match that lasted just under three hours, Gardiner fell to ETSU's Antonio Kolovou in a three-set thriller. The freshman powered her way to victory in the first set, claiming it 7-5, and persevered well throughout the remainder of the match. Gardiner eventually fell 7-5, 3-6, 4-6 in a match that was much more closely-contested than the numbers show.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action on Monday morning as they close out the final day of the Wake Forest Winter Classic. Action will begin at 9:00 a.m. with doubles against Radford, and singles matches against Elon will begin immediately after the conclusion of doubles at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
