WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mélanie Roy clinched the match for the Tribe at No. 3 singles and the No. 61-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team fell to No. 71 William & Mary by a narrow 4-3 margin at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex Friday afternoon.

William & Mary (4-1) clinched the match early after take a 4-0 advantage after Roy's 7-5, 6-0 victory over Andrea Retolaza Andrade on the third court. For Wake Forest (3-2), it is their first loss of the season at home and they are now 2-2 against ranked opponents this season.

The Tribe won the doubles point to gain an early 1-0 lead in the match. Despite falling at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, Kimmy Guerin and and Retolaza claimed a 6-3 victory on the second court against Roy and Julia Casselbury.

To start singles play, the Deacons fell behind 3-0 after Xue Zhang and Guerin lost in their respective matches on courts two and one. Roy then clinched the victory for the Tribe defeating Retozala.

Wake Forest then closed out the match with three straight singles victories. Luisa Fernandez completed her solid performance with a victory over Olivia Thaler 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) to put the Deacons on the board.

Courtney Meredith continued her great start to her career, earning her team-high 13th singles victory of the season with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Cecily Wuenscher on court six. She now has a 13-1 singles record this season since the fall.

 

 

Kasey Gardiner closed out the match with a well fought victory on court five. After winning 6-3 in the first set and losing 1-6 in the second, she displayed a dominating tiebreak with a 10-3 victory in the third.

No. 61 Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at the Tennis Complex. They first face No. 65 Furman at 10 a.m., followed by UNCG at 3 p.m.
