Poske Clinches 4-3 Hoosier Thriller
Feb. 23, 2008
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After just missing an upset over No. 15 Notre Dame on Friday, the Wake Forest women's tennis team finished the weekend with a 4-3 comeback win over No. 28 Indiana on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons are now 3-2 for the year, while Indiana is 7-3 and Notre Dame improved to 7-5.
You wouldn't know it from her cool demeanor, but WFU junior Sierra Poske is all about the drama. She earned wins in two single matches over the weekend that came down to third-set tiebreakers, including the clinching match in Wake's Saturday win over the Hoosiers.
After falling 6-1 in the first set to Indiana's Sigrid Fischer, Poske held the Germany native 3-0 through the opening second set games. Fischer then tied the set at 3-3 and took Poske to a second set tiebreaker. After battling to a breaker win Poske fell behind 1-4 in the final set just as Indiana wrapped up its third singles of night, putting the Hoosiers within one match win of clinching the overall victory.
Meanwhile, at No. 2 singles, sophomore Sasha Kulikova had just rebounded from her 6-4 opening set loss to Katya Zapadalova to take her second and third sets 6-3. Her efforts cut the Demon Deacon deficit to 3-2.
Freshman Katarina Reveche was the only Deac to win the first set on Saturday, but fell behind 3-2 in the second set. The California native rallied to pull a 7-6 tiebreaker in the second set to knot the overall score at 3-3.
Poske then fought through her three game deficit and tied her second set score with Fischer at 5-5. After a few arm pumps to get the crowd going, Poske confidently took the tiebreaker to push the Deacs over the Hoosiers 4-3 with a 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 win.
"Two years ago against Notre Dame Sierra was in the same position but came out on the losing end," WFU head coach Chad Skorupka said. "It was great to see her take the win for us today. The team really stayed with it all the way through the end."
The win tasted extra sweet after a close loss against No. 15 Notre Dame on Friday afternoon. In her first outing following her hand surgery in the fall, Ana German and doubles partner Christian Tara smoked Irish competitors Kristen Rafael/Kali Krisik to open the match. Wake Forest was unable to land doubles wins at courts 2 and 3, however, and the Irish held the 1-0 advantage going into singles.
Tara quickly tied the score with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Cosmina Ciobanu and Kulikova gave Wake Forest a 2-1 edge with her fourth consecutive singles win of the season over Brook Buck at No.2.
The Irish then clinched the match with singles wins over at Nos. 1, 5, 6. Sierra Poske added the final WFU point at No. 4 following the match decision.
Next up, the Demon Deacons are headed to the Lone Star State to face Texas A&M at noon on Saturday, March 1 and No. 8 Baylor at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 2.
