MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 10 Wake Forest women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, defeating No. 31 Alabama before falling, 4-3, to No. 5 Illinois in the championship match.

Match 1 - No. 31 Alabama
The Demon Deacons (8-3) started off the match strong by taking the doubles point on Friday afternoon. Playing at No. 2, Eliza Omirou and Anna Ulyashchenko took their match, 6-2. Then, the Deacs clinched the point with a 6-4 win from Emma Davis and Chandler Carter at No. 1.

When singles play resumed on Saturday morning, the Crimson Tide (12-2) evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6, setting the stage for a hard-fought match.

Wake Forest retook the lead with Ulyashchenko's 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4. However, the Crimson Tide answered back with a three-set victory at No. 5 to even the match at two apiece.

With three matches going to the third set, the Deacs closed out the first two to claim the 4-2 victory. First, Davis blanked No. 118 Andie Daniell, 6-0, in the third set to put the Demon Deacons within one point of winning. Then, Omirou clinched the victory with a 6-4 third-set win at No. 2.

Match 2 - No. 5 Illinois
In the championship match against Illinois (10-1), Wake Forest started strong by taking the first two doubles matches to establish a 1-0 lead.

First, Davis and Carter continued their outstanding play with a 6-2 win at No. 1 before Mary Caroline Meredith and Joanna Zalewski clinched the opening point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.

After dropping the first singles match to allow the Fighting Illini to tie the score, the Demon Deacons answered with a pair of straight-set wins from Ulyashchenko at No. 4 and Meredith at No. 6 to put them within one match of winning the tournament.

However, Illinois responded by taking all three of the matches that went to three sets. Asuka Kawai closed out Davis, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the championship for Illinois.

Up next, the Demon Deacons return home to host No. 4 Duke this Friday, March 2 at 4 p.m.
