BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Head Coach Jeff Wyshner earned his 300th carrer victory Sunday, as the No. 23 Wake Forest women’s tennis team came back to defeat Virginia Tech 4-3 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Demon Deacons (12-4, 3-2 ACC) got off to a slow start as the Hokies (7-6, 0-4 ACC) took the doubles point. Playing No. 1 doubles, Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko were first to finish their match as they earned a 6-2 victory. The duo of Emma Davis and Chandler Carter were next to finish but came up short, losing their match 6-2 on court No. 2. With the doubles point on the line, the duo of Alexis Franco and Courtney Meredith fell on court No. 3, 6-3.

As the match transitioned into singles play, Virginia Tech quickly extended the lead to 2-0 as Joanna Zalewski was forced to retire from her No. 4 match due to injury. Carter was able to get the first point on the scoreboard for the Deacs and cut the Hokies’ lead to 2-1 as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory on court No. 5. Playing No. 3 singles, Ulyashchenko came up short, losing 7-5, 6-2. Luisa Fernandez, playing on court No. 6, kept the Deacs alive by defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-4. No. 50 Kimmy Guerin found herself in a top 100 match up on court No. 1 against No. 93 Francesca Fusinato. Guerin outlasted Fusinato in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-3, before pulling the Demon Deacons even with the Hokies with a 7-5 victory in the second set.

With the match tied up 3-3, all eyes shifted to court No. 2 where Davis found herself in a three-set thriller. Davis dropped the first set 7-6 (2) to No. 99 Natalie Novotna but rallied back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-4 and complete the comeback for the Demon Deacons.

The Deacs return to action on Sunday, March 26 for a double header against NC State and East Carolina at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
