Deacons Drop 6-1 Decision to No. 12 Virginia on Senior Day
April 1, 2012 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Rebecca Siegler closed out a perfect ACC singles weekend but the Wake Forest women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 12 Virginia on Sunday at the Wake Forest tennis complex. The match served as the Demon Deacons' Senior Day. Seniors Ryann Cutillo and Kayla Duncan were honored in a ceremony before the match. Virginia swept the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Siegler quickly pulled the Deacons even at No. 3 singles when her opponent Erin Vierra retired with an injury early in the first set. Siegler was leading 3-1 at the time. The freshman from Boca Raton, Fla. completed a perfect ACC singles weekend, becoming the first Demon Deacon rookie to do so since 2009. The Cavaliers earned straight-set victories at the Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 positions to seal the win. In the last match on court at No. 1 singles, No. 63 Kayla Duncan rallied back from a 5-2 first set deficit to take the opening frame 7-5 against No. 43 Lindsey Hardenbergh. Hardenbergh won the second set 6-3, and with the overall match already clinched, the two played a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set. In the breaker, Duncan led early, but Hardenbergh stormed back to take the tiebreak 10-7, avenging her loss to Duncan back in January. The Demon Deacons will hit the road this week, traveling to face Maryland on Thursday and Boston College on Saturday. #12 Virginia 6, Wake Forest 1 Singles
