CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Wake Forest was swept 7-0 in both singles and doubles by No. 18 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center despite strong efforts across the board.
The Demon Deacons (1-15, 0-6 ACC) could not overcome the early pressure that they faced as the Cavaliers (11-7, 5-1 ACC) quickly struck to claim the doubles point.
The Cavaliers wrapped up the point with Erin Vierra and Stephanie Nauta's 8-2 win over Kathryn Talbert and Kasey Gardiner at the top spot. Andrea Retolaza and Catherine Roach fought hard to prevent the sweep at No. 3, but were overpowered 8-2 by Li Xi and Maria Fuccillo.
Virginia extended its lead to 3-0 in the overall match with swift wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions in singles. Vierra defeated Retolaza 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 while Fuccillo dropped Roach 6-0, 6-0 at the bottom of the lineup.
The clinching point came at No. 2 singles as No. 65 Nauta and Zhang squared off. Despite the freshman's best efforts, the Cavaliers emerged with a 6-1, 6-2 victory and an insurmountable 4-0 lead in the match.
With the momentum firmly in hand, Virginia completed the sweep with victories at the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 positions.
Wake Forest will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they remain in the state of Virginia to face No. 62 Virginia Tech. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be the final match away from home in the regular season for the Deacs.
