Deacons Downed by No. 15 Virginia in ACC Tournament
April 19, 2012
CARY, N.C. - Fifth-seeded Virginia took the doubles point and then raced to three quick singles wins to defeat 12th-seeded Wake Forest 4-0 in the first round of the ACC Women's Tennis Championship at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The match was the final one in a Wake Forest uniform for seniors Ryann Cutillo and Kayla Duncan. Duncan was named to the 2012 All-ACC Team earlier in the day. Cutillo was one of the few bright spots of the day for the Deacons, having led 5-1 in the second set at the time the match was stopped after dropping the first set.
Wake Forest ends the 2012 campaign with a 3-18 record. 15th-ranked Virginia moves on to face fourth-seeded Clemson on Friday in the quarterfinals.
The Cavaliers started strong by winning the doubles point.
Virginia's formidable doubles team of No. 13 Emily Fraser and Lindsey Hardenbergh finished first at the No. 2 position, downing Karen Forman and Rebecca Siegler 8-2. In the No. 3 match, which featured Wake Forest's Brigita Bercyte and Catherine Roach against Virginia's Maria Fuccillo and Caryssa Peretz, Roach used her big serve to take the opening game but the Cavalier tandem then took over, winning eight of the next nine games to win 8-2 and clinch the doubles point.
The Cavaliers kept the momentum going in singles, taking the first set on all six courts. Fuccillo earned Virginia's second point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Roach at No. 6, and Peretz made it 3-0 in the Hoos' favor with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Forman at No. 5.
