CARY, N.C. - No. 30 Florida State proved to be too much for Wake Forest, downing the Demon Deacons 4-1 in the first round of the ACC Championship on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The seventh-seeded Seminoles (14-8) took the doubles point and won three straight-set singles matches to earn the win. Wake Forest's lone point came at No. 3 singles, where Kasey Gardiner's opponent Mia Vriens retired early in the first set with an injury.
"I'm really proud of this team," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "Like we have for the past few months, we refused to quit today. Kathryn battled back from down 4-1 in the second set, knowing that if she lost it would end the match, to get to 4-4 and Andrea saved four match points. This is a character team."
The Seminoles took the doubles point by virtue of quick wins at the bottom two positions. Kerrie Cartwright and Kristina Schleich of Florida State took down Brigita Bercyte and Andrea Retolaza Andrade 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, and Mia Vriens and Amy Sargeant clinched the point with an 8-3 win over Karen Forman and Xue Zhang at No. 2.
At the time the point was clinched and the No. 1 match stopped, Wake Forest's Kasey Gardiner and Kathryn Talbert were only points away from beating the Seminoles' top doubles team of Daneika Borthwick and Francesca Segarelli with Talbert serving at 7-6.
The match would quickly become tied again though as the Seminoles' Vriens retired early in the first set at No. 3 singles despite leading Gardiner 3-2 at the time.
But the Seminoles were still able to take three straight-set singles matches to earn the win. At No. 2 singles, No. 96 Segarelli took down Zhang 6-2, 6-1, and Sargeant followed with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Forman at No. 4 to put Florida State in front 3-1.
Kerrie Cartwright sealed the victory for Florida State at the No.5 position, downing Retolaza Andrade 6-1, 6-3.
