Deacons Play Qualifying at USTA/ITA Carolina Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest got off to a slow start at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships Thursday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center as all three Demon Deacons that were competing in singles qualifying fell in the opening round.

Karen Forman, who was one of the qualifying seeds, dropped a 6-1, 7-6 (6), decision to South Carolina's Ximena Siles. Forman had trailed 6-1 in the second set tiebreak and rallied back to tie the score at 6-6 in an effort to force a third set but could not complete the comeback.

Xue Zhang fell 6-3, 6-2 to UNCG's Annette Rios, and Brigita Bercyte was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by seeded NC State player Elisha Hande.

Wake Forest's three remaining singles players, Kathryn Talbert, Andrea Retolaza Andrade and Kasey Gardiner, will begin play in the singles main draw tomorrow. The Demon Deacons' three doubles teams of Talbert and Gardiner, Forman and Zhang and Bercyte and Retolaza Andrade will also start play tomorrow in the second round after receiving first-round byes.
