CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's singles tennis team found success Friday at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional, going 5-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.

Winning for the Deacons in the first round of singles were Kimmy Guerin, Xue Zhang, Andrea Retolaza Andrade, Kasey Gardiner and Samantha Asch.

Zhang's match was the most dramatic as she battled past NC State's Elisha Hande in a 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 marathon. At the end of it all, the two were separated by only three total points, with Zhang winning 143 and Hande 140.

Gardiner breezed past her Wolfpack opponent, knocking off Nicole Martinez 6-0, 6-1. Retolaza beat Elon's Bryn Khour 6-2, 6-1 and Guerin topped Campbell's Ana Ortiz 6-3, 6-1. Asch finished out the singles wins for the Deacs, topping Coastal Carolina's Libby Scott 6-1, 7-5.

Two Wake Forest doubles teams also won Friday to book a spot in the third round. Asch and Luisa Fernandez beat Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales from UNCW 8-3 and Gardiner and Zhang defeated UNCW's Olga Blank and Hollie Champion 8-5.
