WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Kasey Gardiner advanced to the second round of singles and the team of Gardiner and Kathryn Talbert reached the Round of 16 in doubles as the Wake Forest women's tennis team continued play at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships Friday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
Gardiner defeated Brites Moniz-Soares of Davidson 7-5, 6-2 to book a spot in the second round where she will face ninth-seeded Katarina Popova from South Carolina tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Gardiner and Talbert shut out Barbora Lazarova and Bryn Khoury of Elon in the second round of doubles to start the day, before dropping a tight 9-8 (7) decision to North Carolina's Lauren McHale and Tessa Lyons in the Round of 16.
Karen Forman and Xue Zhang each won two matches in the consolation draw Friday. Forman topped NC State's Sophie Nelson 6-0, 6-2 and Winthrop's Giovanna Portioli 6-4, 6-3. Zhang beat Gardner-Webb's Jenny Lunde 6-4, 6-1 and UNCW's Hamilton Lovett 7-5, 6-0.
