Deacons Take Five of Six Singles Matches from Purdue

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Wake Forest put on a strong performance in singles, taking five of six matches from a Purdue team that finished last year in the Top 30 nationally, as the Demon Deacons continued play in the Midwest Blast Saturday in Champaign, Ill.
Freshman Kimmy Guerin led the way for the Demon Deacons with the first ranked win of her career, defeating Purdue's No. 125 Mara Schmidt 6-4, 6-1. Andrea Retolaza Andrade also posted a solid win for the Deacons, topping the Boilermakers' top player Lynda Xepoleas 6-2, 6-4.
Rounding out the singles action for the Deacs against the Boilermakers were Luisa Fernandez, who beat Daniela Vidal 7-5, 6-3, Xue Zhang, who topped Natalia Davila 6-2, 6-3 and Karen Forman, who took down Andjela Djokovic 6-0, 7-5.
The Deacons also faced Illinois in doubles Saturday with Zhang and Kasey Gardiner beating the Illini's top tandem of Allison Falkin and Jerricka Boone 8-7 (3).
Wake Forest will finish play in the tournament tomorrow with a singles matchup against Missouri.
