GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest women’s tennis player Eliza Omirou was named the ACC’s Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

The native of Nicosia, Cyprus led the Demon Deacons to a 2-1 record at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama this past weekend, including a win over No. 31 Alabama.

Omirou, currently No. 63 in the ITA’s singles rankings, won the clinching match against the Crimson Tide, outlasting Smith Hinton, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot and sending the Deacs to the championship match against No. 5 Illinois. She also won the clincher at No. 2 in the team’s 4-0 victory over UAB on Feb. 23.

Playing with Anna Ulyashchenko, Omirou delivered a 2-0 doubles record for the tournament. The duo defeated UAB, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles and earned a 6-2 victory over Alabama at No. 2 doubles.

Omirou is the second Demon Deacon to earn ACC weekly honors this season, joining Emma Davis, who was named ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 30. She is the first freshman to earn an ACC weekly honor since Ulyashchenko was named ACC Co-Player of the Week as a freshman in 2016.

The No. 12 Demon Deacons are off to an 8-3 start to the 2018 season. They return home to face No. 2 Duke this Friday, March 2 at 4 p.m.
