WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Nicole Castronuova turned in a season best time of 24.23 seconds in the 200 meter dash on Saturday afternoon to claim a first place finish and lead the Demon Deacons in the final day of the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium.

Freshmen Gwen and Maddy Ricco also notched successful performances in the 200 meter dash on the day, as Gwen earned a fifth place finish with a time of 24.52 and Maddy crossed the line in 24.87 seconds to finish in 13th place out of 141 runners. Another freshman standout, Myesha Barr, set an outdoor personal best record with a time of 25.85 seconds.

Wake Forest had three hurdlers competing in the finals of the women's 100 meter hurdles, with senior Alex Gove leading the way with a sixth place finish and a time of 14.72 seconds. Gwen Ricco followed close behind in 15.26 seconds, which was good for a 12th place finish, and Maddy Ricco rounded out the Deacon hurdling trio with a time of 15.88 seconds.

In the 400 meter hurdles, senior Caroline Vaughn turned in a strong performance with a second place finish and a time of 59.66 seconds. Gove crossed the line directly behind Vaughn in 1:00.80 to earn a third place finish.

Wake Forest had a number of participants in the 1,500 meter run, with sophomore Casey Fowler leading the way in 19th place out of 115 runners with a new personal best outdoor time of 4:43.57. Graduate student Erin Redden crossed the finish line in 21st place with a time of 4:44.84, and freshman Claire Hagler marked her debut in the 1,500 meters with a solid time of 4:57.94. Another Wake Forest runner also made her outdoor debut, as redshirt freshman Cindy Adams crossed the line in 5:06.80.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, one of the most challenging track events, junior Caitlin Crawford raced in impressive fashion to a personal best time of 11:12.71 to notch a fifth place finish. Crawford shaved more than 20 seconds off of her previous personal best time.

In the field events action, redshirt senior Carly Mauch threw for 134-11.00 (41.12 meters) in the javelin throw to claim a fourth place finish. Sophomore Sarah Brobeck continued to improve upon her strong weekend in the throws, as she notched a mark of 116-04.00 (35.47 meters) to finish in 14th place. In the discus throw, Brobeck earned a 13th place finish with a throw of 118-09.00 (36.19 meters).

Sophomore Erin Brooks covered a distance of 17-04.00 feet to finish 16th in the women's long jump, and fellow sophomore Samantha Howell recorded a jump of 5-00.25 feet in the high jump.

On the men's side, sophomore Thomas Morrison led four Demon Deacon runners in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:03.61, which was good enough for a 25th place finish out of 127 runners. Freshman Tom Finneran followed Morrison with a time of 4:05.52 to place 38th, and fellow freshman Will Ficklen crossed the finish line in 4:11.99.

A trio of Wake Forest runners led the way in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, including a first place finish from senior Marcus Dillon with a time of 9:18.43. Sophomore Paul Loeser also ran a strong race, crossing the line in 9:38.42 to finish sixth overall. Freshman Jake Graham rounded out the top ten with a 9:54.74 finish time.

Freshman Sean Lunkenheimer turned in a strong performance in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a 10th place finish and a time of 55.43 seconds to mark his outdoor debut. Freshman Andrew Rodriguez also competed in the event and raced to a 1:01.04 finish.

In the final race of the day, the men's 4x400 meter relay, the Wake Forest team of Brent LaRue, Tyler Dodds, Allan Lunkenheimer, and Jon Reid teamed up to earn a first place finish in a season best time of 3:09.59. That time ranks just three seconds shy of the Kentner Stadium record of 3:06.22. LaRue ran an impressive opening leg for the Deacons, as he handed off the baton to Dodds in first place. Dodds and Lunkenheimer maintained the lead throughout the relay before Reid quickly put the race out of reach with a strong final leg.

In the field events, freshman Todd McFadden notched a mark of 19-11.00 feet (6.07 meters) in the long jump.

The Wake Forest track and field teams will return to action next weekend at the Raleigh Relays held in Raleigh, N.C.
