Bingham, Kennedy Finish Strong At Deacon Combined Events
March 25, 2005
Winston-Salem, NC - Molly Kennedy finished second in the heptathlon at the 2005 Deacon Combined Events, while fellow freshman Michael Bingham tied for first in the decathlon. Bingham's 6,778 points were the third most ever scored on the Kentner Stadium track.
Kennedy, who led the pack after day one, slipped to second place after Friday's first two events. A win in the final event of the competition-the 800 meter run-kept her in second place, edging Akron's Jen Osborn by 312 points. Kennedy finished sixth in both the long jump (4.98m) and the javelin (24.32m). With 4,521 total points, she fell short of first place overall by just 172 points. Ana Lorenzo of St. Augustine's College claimed the title.
Bingham, day one's leader, remained in the lead through four events on Friday. He claimed first place in the 110 meter hurdles (14.80), second place in the discus (36.00m), tied for sixth in the pole vault competition (3.72m) and ninth in the javelin throw (40.32m). A seventh place finish in the 1,500 meter run (4:59.40) landed him in a tie for the title with Brian Spickler.
Bingham's 47.82 in the 400 meters on day one broke a Kentner Stadium track record (47.88), previously set on March 21, 1995 by Wake's Garrett Putman. Bingham's mark in that event, and his 100 meter dash time of 10.68, were the fastest by anyone in the ACC this season. In fact, all but three of his event scores landed him in the top-five performances of the conference this year.
Kennedy and Bingham, both freshmen, were the only two Deacon athletes to compete in the full meet. Junior Mike Loyd ran only in the 100 meter dash, finishing second with a 10.80.
